September was Made for Fashionistas

The start of September means that summer becomes an afterthought while all things fall (Riding boots! Peacoats! Pumpkin Spice Lattes!) emerge front and center as we start a cooler new season.

Fall is my favorite time of year. The air is crisp as apples and the afternoon light changes from a bright white to a warm glow as the cool air moves into town.

September to me means I can shelve the over-worn tanks and cutoffs, which serve a great purpose in the million degree heat but end up being a snooze by end of the season, and begin doing what we fashionistas do best: break out the wool and plaid and start layering until our hearts are content. September is the season for fashion.

Last year during this time I lived out my dream of going to New York Fashion Week. I had been sidelined for years, sitting at my computer watching the runway shows online from home. Now I was sitting front row (OK, back row actually) watching the models glide down the runway wearing the must-have trends of the Spring 2015 collections.

I was given access to the American Express VIP Card Member Lounge at MADE Fashion Week on the first day I was in the city. American Express is known to roll out the red carpet for any and all events they host, and this one was no different. I was treated to mimosas, a complimentary blow dry by Drybar and special seating for the shows.

After the Costello Tagliapietra fashion show, a handful of editors and bloggers were escorted back to the lounge where we had an intimate Q&A with the plaid-and-suspender-clad designers to discuss their spring line. The infamous Kelly Cutrone, who produced the show, sat just off to my right.

My friend and Jet-Set Edit contributing beauty correspondent, Alison Waite, and I secured backstage access to the Trina Turk show at Lincoln Center courtesy of Beauty.com, the leading expert on all things beauty. When we walked backstage, the models were lined up around the room as anywhere from two to six makeup artists, hair stylists and manicurists brushed, painted and sculpted the beauties for the show.

It was glorious chaos, and I’ll be heading back to New York the second week of September to do it all over again. Follow us @jetsetedit on Instagram for a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on backstage, a peek at the latest trends for Spring 2016, and insider tips on where the fashionistas flock to in the Big Apple.

Here’s to boot season!
