5 Tips for Staying Healthy on Vacation

How to stay on track with your healthy routine while you’re away.

We all know the best part of being on vacation is taking a break from your healthy diet and indulging on pretty much whatever comes your way. Add to this loss of control missed time at the gym and you’re left with a few extra inches when you get home, which makes for a painful return to working out and eating right. Follow these five foolproof ways to stay healthy while you travel.

Do at least one outdoor activity a day. Vacationing doesn’t necessarily mean you have to totally veg out on the beach all day. Being active outdoors like going on a hike or a bike ride will allow you to discover the beauty of your surroundings while burning calories at the same time.

Eat local. Dining on foods that are specific to the region you’re visiting often provides you with the freshest and healthiest ingredients. Choose menu items that are sourced locally, such as the catch of the day or farm fresh veggies.

Visit a local gym. If you’re traveling for an extended period of time, seeking out a local gym is a great way to stay on track with your fitness goals because you have access to the same workouts you do at home. If you aren’t staying at a hotel with a fitness center on-site, do a little research and find a gym or fitness studio that offers an affordable daily rate.

Count your cocktails. One of the best parts of going on vacation is sampling the local brews, wine and cocktails, right? Because it’s near impossible to resist any drink that comes garnished with a little umbrella, be sure to keep up with the number of fruity, sugary drinks you’re consuming and drink only at lunch or dinner to keep your calorie consumption low.

Treat yourself to a little R&R. A healthy mind means a healthy body. Take time to focus on your mental health by finding ways to rejuvenate mentally and physically, such as reading a good book seaside or treating yourself to a spa day.
